Here is a recent project I did for a neighbor. He has this 22" long plane, missing the cutter and wedge. The strike button was pounded down to nothing. So I made a new wedge from quartersawn. Made a new strike button out of Osage Orange. The cutter was bought on E-bay.
The plane was marked...
I have ordered a Lee Valley thick blade to put into my scraper plane and a large Accu-Burr to turn the edge. In the meantime I have taken my plane apart and verified it was indeed made by Sargent. It's a #59 but with Fulton on the blade. The number 59 was found on the inside of the two parts...
Not my oldest but pretty close. I just finished a study of Taylor braces. His patent was from 1836, so these are all after that.
The study is a 23mb PDF file. Enjoy.
We don't seem to have thread for hand braces so I am adding some info to this thread.
I just finished a study on Taylor braces. It's a large PDF file. Enjoy.
I've been working on a early brace study and have been working with a couple historical societies. One of them just sent me a copy of a document they are working on. (Are they ever really finished?) Anyway I notice a axe factory on the cover image and they talk about it a little.
Was plating today and used the masking lacquer. Took picture so you can see how it removes. In the picture are two sections out of similar push drills. I didn't want to plate the spirals because the plating may make the tolerance too tight. The blue peels right off.
Working on a Millers-Falls 731 brace. The chuck spindle is held on with a screw on top, Under that is suppose to be a "D" washer. It was missing. Found one on another brace. It measures 5/8" OD, for a 7/16" shaft with a flat. Thickness is .045", steel. I have not been able to locate a...
Here is an interesting steel square. Unmarked. Has slots to mark parallel lines down a board on 1/4" spacing. Several more interesting features, the end of the short leg is at an angle the is equal to a 1:8 ratio for dovetails. The slot with the rounded ends, would mark a slot 1/2" wide 1/2"...
Two ways come to mind. Put some blue tape on a sheet of plastic and then use a knife or gasket cutter to cut out a ring. There would still be a little overspray on the ends of the teeth that could be cleaned with a wire brush,
One tool I use for some nickel plating is a masking lacquer. You...
