What do I need to drill into this steel?

I would use a new, quality (made in US), SHORT, Cobalt drill of ~5/32" for the pilot hole. Use high sulfur, pipe thread cutting oil at very low RPM, with plenty of pressure to keep it cutting. Replace the drill as soon as it shows any sign of losing it's sharpness.

Separating metal working from other areas

My shop is a bit larger, ~750 sq ft, but I don't bother with barriers to keep things separated. However the metalworking and woodworking are more or less at opposite ends of the shop. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

Mag Drill Chuck and Speed Question

The Champion AC50 is the real deal. You'll want to use Weldon shank cutters.

    Lathe project question

This. In my 70's I bought my first lathe, a Logan 2657V (?) 12" x 36". It was dirt simple, had the quick-change gearbox, and came with 3 and 4-jaw chucks plus a bunch of tooling. The owner had passed. Paid $1,000 for the whole deal. Wheeled it into my shop, plugged it in and began teaching...

Yes on the Snap-On 1/2" ratchet. Should first find out if he has one or what he needs.

New to machining, is lathe tooling interchangeable

Excellent post. But I think you missed it on the mind reading part. :) Cutting tools, tool holders and live centers can amount to real money (well, maybe not live centers), but not when compared to the cost of adding: collet closer, taper attachment, steady rest, toolpost grinder, DRO, (etc)...

New to machining, is lathe tooling interchangeable

In bold is the very best advice you've received so far. If you choose to ignore that advice, you will certainly deserve the hard lessons that will inevitably follow. In the attached photo you will see my lathe flanked by 2 rollaway cabinets which are crammed full of mostly lathe tooling. Their...
