It's all about thermal conductivity and thermal mass. Your 1/4" plate will heat up to desired temp quicker, recover quicker, and is likely transferring more heat to the crust. In theory the 1/2" will hold the heat longer. In practice you're probably in a rush to get it hot and start slinging...

It won't hold up to tire pressure, but there's typically a small rubber seal in the tip to keep dust/debris out. Always put your caps on!!

Appreciate the feedback! In that case I might consider going with the Ribtrax Smooth version. They don't look as cool but I think they'd work much better for me, and still have the drainage feature to keep them clean. Time to start shopping 🤑
