Wood dust is an explosive. You can't use a wood stove if that is what your shop will be.

First choice would be geothermal, I agree with all that was said, cooling is just a given if you use this system. If not, what about a pellet stove? Super easy, and cars can bang into the pellet storage all they want!

I think that you shouldn't have the thermostat near a door if it will be dramatically effected. If the temp in the room gets effected by the door being opened, then the boiler should kick on. So, I say, room thermostat properly placed.
