The Homeowners Guide to Plumbing, Episode 5, Sump pumps and subsurface drainage.

Timely! I had water in my basement for the first time since I bought my house (only been here 2 years, this spring was pretty wet). Some background: Tri-level in Colorado, basement is half finished, half crawl space. The crawl space side is the only side that got wet as the slab on the...

What is the proper way to dispose of old gasoline?

See if the local fire department will take it for their wildland drip torches (assuming that's a thing in your part of the world)... or just be able to dispose of it for you. We use a gas/diesel mix but a gas/oil/diesel mix should work just fine.

    Length of Backyard Buddy on-ramps?

Hey, I've read that build-up thread! Nice garage, even nicer 40!

    Underground home garage?

Another thing to consider is ventilation. It seems fumes would be more apt to accumulate in an underground "vault" than in a conventional above ground design. CO2 is slightly lighter than air so that could be taken care of with a high powered exhaust fan in the ceiling leading to a pipe in the...

    Swamp Cooler

Not personally... but they are common in my area. According to the swamp cooler maps they work here!

    Swamp Cooler

Yeah... the plexiglass would just be to keep the rest of the heat out! All the weight would be on the 2x4 support on the ground. Dry enough climate I think... front range of Colorado. Lots of them in use here.

    Swamp Cooler

Not technically garage related, but Heating and A/C related: A buddy just gave me a window mount swamp cooler that sits outside with the window part inside. Well, the window I wanted to mount it on is too small (slides side to side) for the inside part to fit through. This got me thinking...

    Wiring help!

I admit that I overlooked the obvious... a new, QUIETER fan. Duh. This is my new plan. However, my wife just got laid off and things are a bit tight right now money wise. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I don't mind having the fan on (especially, since was mentioned there is no window...

    Wiring help!

It was professionally mitigated... I may have misunderstood the exact process, that's just how I understood it. I have a certificate thingy.

    Wiring help!

This is a bathroom vent fan... I think a pull chain would look a bit goofy.

    Wiring help!

A glimmer of hope! I had guessed that was a possibility as well... and a great way to test the theory.

    Wiring help!

Dang. I was afraid of that. That takes me from "could stumble through it" to "no chance I can do that myself". No copper in this house! All aluminum... though it has been mitigated properly (all connections spliced to copper and heat shrink applied).

    Wiring help!

My bathroom light and fan turn on together. The fan is REALLY loud and my wife really wants them to be on separate switches. I popped the face plate off and here is what I have: 3 wires coming into the box, the white wires (3 total) from each tie together and go to an outlet in the box. The...

    The economy and theft/security

Be aware that if you have a fire at your property this will most likely slow down suppression activities while the fire department attempts to contact you.
