Find a local structural engineer that does residential design. Pay for a couple hours consulting and get your solution. You can sleep better this way.

As an architect, I probably will over-plan and over-detail my own project. Its pretty easy to plan on spending $100M of a client's money but something else spending my own money. I am in the planning and design phase now but hope to have the project started in a couple of months.
