I dont want to cut a hole in the roof and permantly mount the thermostat if the heater doesnt work. I hooked up the themostat temporarily and the valve clicked open but still no gas to the pilot system. I think im going to have to take the top off the gas valve and see if there is a blockage...

It is natural gas and its not electronic ignition its probably 20 years old. Took the tube off the gas valve and no gas comes out of the valve.
