Raising rafter ties on Saltbox style garage roof.

I am interested in getting rid of the rafter ties altogether. The 2 x 4 “raised rafter ties “are in more of a collar tie location so I thought there was no harm in putting those in as I was trying to straighten out the ridge itself and needed something to “hold it in place” while I braced...

Raising rafter ties on Saltbox style garage roof.

There’s 0 chance I am making it weaker, the building was tweaked and so out of whack when I bought the house, it’s not even funny. The amount of dry rot in some of the wood that I replaced, I’m surprised that even passed inspection. I’d say if you’re gonna make a comment like that, at least...

Hahaha no no, as mentioned I got some direction from bill and a good friend of mine, his sister has a structural engineer on staff, they have a fairly large construction company. After speaking with the engineer he said bill was spot on with the knee wall and would like to see 3 4x4 or 4x6...

Here’s a picture of the work we’ve done so far, 2x6 rafters ties coming out and repurposed in new higher position. Also ended up repositioning the ridge where the loft is and installed a 4x4 king stud going from the ridge to the loft header.

It's begun! I'm straightening out the garage and prepping for the new raised rafter tie design by @billconner. First, the ridge board was sagging a bit since the garage was built in 1940. I used a 4x4 post to lift it back into place, making sure it was level. I originally planned to use my...

Really this idea all started bc I have/had to raise the garage track height. Reason being the door coming from the breezeway into the garage is on the high side and right when you open the garage door and start walking in you (especially if you are tall like me 6’6) you can get smacked in the...

Makes sense! Ok I’ll have an engineer take a look at what we came up with, thanks again! One other question / variable that hasn’t been discussed is the fact that the breeze way is connected to the garage and in my eyes adding strength and rigidity to the taller left side wall? Does that make...

Raising rafter ties on Saltbox style garage roof.

Perfect! I just didn’t know if it mattered that the current rafter ties on the garage don’t span from wall to wall. As mentioned, they just go from the higher wall and spa a distance of about 20 feet with the building being 27 feet long. The 7 feet That the rafter ties don’t span was always my...

Oh no I don’t want them lower, that’s where the rafter ties sit currently. You had them going from top plate to top plate, they go from higher wall top plate, to where I drew them to.

Does it change things that the rafter ties run like this and not how you have it in the drawing?

I’m sorry I meant the top plate of the wall, not sill. Like this

Love it!!! Thank you! One thing to mention is the current rafter ties are 2x6’s. With that in mind, Would I be able to have the new rafter/collar ties going from the top of the knee wall to the level, adjacent short side 2x4 roof rafters Also have a support piece going from the top of the...

A foot off of the new knee wall or a foot off of the existing higher side wall on the left?
