How do I check the existing pad?

I have a 24' x 30' deep detached garage, with a gable roof. I would love to extend it 12' deeper for a total of 42'. Is this possible? I've never done building construction before. So I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions. I want to do most of the building myself. Probably pay professionals...
