Anyone replaced alternator slip rings? Help with tape and soldering please.

The slip ring leads are held on by winding tie string that is soaked in varnish to harden it. Clip off with flush cutters, re tie with a porous flat string and harden it with cyanoacrylate glue or Dolph’s ac-41 spray varnish if you want to be technical. It will be challenging to desolder and...

What do you guys use vise grips for these days?

Besides all the other great uses for Visegrips mentioned already, use them with a heel bar for pulling out alignment pins, dovetail wedges, and keys

What stuff still requires SAE even if your doing all metric work?

That’s exactly it. Ive seen it mostly on cheap electric motors and pump equipment that is copying a recognizable form factor. Heads marked right or wrong or blank. Makes for sae/metric redundancy not only in sockets and wrenches but also rigging hardware.

What stuff still requires SAE even if your doing all metric work?

It’s really very simple to be fluent in sae and metric in todays world. However, I draw the line at hybrid fasteners. Every so often we run into bolts on import machinery with metric threads and sae sized heads (and vice versa). That’s just not right.

What Tools have you Broke? What Caused them to Break?

I don’t normally break my tools but when I do it’s usually because I’m misusing them. In the last few months: Cheapo set of pistol grip needle nose pliers by side prying a valve stem into a wheel. Kobalt chrome 1/4 hex bit socket on an impact driver. I had previously ground the bit down...

How often do you use 1/2" sockets/ratchets?

At work I use 3/4, 1/2, 3/8, 1/4 daily and 1” drive weekly. 1/2 drive is 75% impact, 25% ratchet. Working on industrial equipment fasteners typically range from machine screws to 2” bolts. For automotive work I use mostly 3/8, but I wouldn’t want to be without 1/2

Help: Broken Tap in Flight Hardware

Hah, that’s fair. I suppose it comes down to the size of the piece the hole is in, but yes those might be a little much. For something very small and delicate, maybe an electric engraver pen would be more appropriate.

Help: Broken Tap in Flight Hardware

If you can wiggle it with tweezers but it’s too jammed to turn out keep some left hand tension on the tap and LIGHTLY vibrate the piece with an air hammer (if there is a safe place). A sawzall with no blade pushed against the piece can vibrate it as well. Do this upside down if possible.
