It has nothing to do with a grounded ethernet cable. It has to do with unbalanced grounds and the ethernet cable acting as an unintentional ground cable. It has been know to fry ethernet switch gear.

Ethernet cable will work but personally I'd go with fiber. Pre-terminated lengths are very affordable and you avoid potential grounding differential issues that is known to fry hardware. Put a conduit in the trench along with the water line.

My grandfather gave me one 35 years ago. I'm not sure where he got it from but I recall the box wasn't new when I got it. I was young then and still have it but I recall it is not very user friendly.
