No question, insulate the whole thing. There's no more powerful heat sink than the earth. Your hydronic floor will never be efficient until it's fully insulated with 2" foam underneath and all around. It won't take long to forget the pain of paying for the insulation, after you start...

You mentioned that you cut off the bad end of the wire. Is it clean from there on? You should be able to check continuity with an ohmmeter, from the clean end of the wire to the end of the spark 'plug' tip. Might not need to replace it. If you do need to replace, just use automotive spark plug...

Hi Doc, On further research, your style of ignitor is not a simple spark transformer, it's a complete standalone spark generator unit. Unless you're good at electronics, just testing with an ohmmeter won't tell you anything. You can however test whether the 24VAC is making it to the input...

I did mine by notching the ends of horizontal 2x4's. Here's a pic.
