The black wires are in fact black. Concur on mud or paint.
Good news though - I figured it out!
Turns out the traveler wires on the 4-way were done incorrectly. I pulled out my multimeter to check which ones went where, wired it back up and prestochango, everything works as it should...
Thanks all for the advice so far, I’ll pull the switches out when I get home and see what I’m working with.
House is new construction and they’re ceiling canister lights. Bulbs are LED. As to not working right that was in reference to the four way switching aspect.
Have a set of four way switches controlling the living room ceiling lights that never seemed to work right. Finally did a test of all combinations and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction before I open up the switch covers and look at the wiring.

Soffits are vented and the garage is well sealed. Small gap at the bottom of one side of the garage door due to uneven cement.
With the ceiling being open I’m not as worried about the temp in the “attic” as I am with the temp in the whole garage
