I live in Florida, do I want gas?

We didn't have gas in Savannah and I didn't miss it except when it was in the 20s for a few days after an ice and snow storm (which was a once-in-several-decades event) and the capacitor in the heat pump went out. We got by with heater fans until the roads were clear enough to go get the cap...

    Sam’s Club -VS- Costco

We have Sam's and Costco memberships (they're across the street from each other). Some things are better from one or the other. Sam's has the pickup and scan-and-go which I appreciate; Costco has better deals on some things and carries beer I like (but why, Sweetwater, did you change the...

    Wedding Ring

I lost the first one within a year; it fell off in the ocean when I was trying to learn to windsurf. Went through a couple carbide ones, and wife had a resize or two done before we finally decided to just get them tattooed on.

Mounting Adel clamps to larger bolts — what's your workaround?

All the P clamps I've used came with holes for #10 hardware. I've used #8 a few times, and also drilled a couple out for 1/4in. I don't know if anything bigger would leave enough meat on the clamp. Could you make a little extension tab that the bigger hardware picks up, and then mount your P...

What's the trick to getting rivet shanks to break off cleanly every time?

The solution is to get a rivet gun and bucking bars (new tools!) and learn to drive solid rivets. No shanks to stick up 😉

I'm a satisfied customer of these batteries. Yes, they are that light.

    Laser guided miter saw thoughts

I have a 12 year old sliding Ryobi; the laser is a gimmick. It'll get you in the ballpark but that's it. Soft start would be really nice, but I don't use it often enough to justify a new one. It was a "buy it for the project" purchase when I built my shop at the old house.

Are the cheaper benchtop "precision" lathes worth it to have around for projects?

Yesterday I dug mine out for the first time after our move and used it to turn down a 5/16 socket so it would fit into a tight recess. For this kind of use it's just fine.

New fast EV chargers and three phase power

I can't think of any reason to put a fast charger at your house. If for some reason you just have to charge up super quickly at home (and I can't think of one), it would probably be cheaper to just buy two cars and drive one while charging the other on a normal 240V charger. This. We have two...

Electric lawnmowers in 2026 - any good?

I've been using a Greenworks 60V one for 8 years and counting. No issues.

Are the cheaper benchtop "precision" lathes worth it to have around for projects?

I have a little HF mini lathe I picked up off Craigslist years ago. It's done great for the simple little things I needed it for (making simple bushings, boring out an alternator pulley, etc). Just be prepared to spend time working slowly to get the results you want.

    Office in garage, layout advice

How much space do you need? Before the ******* CEO yanked hybrid work away, my "office" at home was a cheap Amazon gaming desk against the wall in my shop, between my toolbox and a parts rack. But then, we never used our cameras for meetings, so I wasn't concerned about my background. (CEO...
