My cheapo unit did something similar and I pulled the back plate off and found that one of the wire connectors had shaken loose and was arcing. Staked it tight and now the compressor is mounted to the floor on hockey pucks to cushion. As you said it is hard to tell without seeing it.

I have had that bottom box now for a couple years. It is way better than you would expect from HF and will serve as a home use box probably as long as I will need. It is as good as most of the new Craftsman stuff that is out there, but no where near the quality or sturdiness of my old snap on...
