If you had the chance to start over what floor would you go with?

It depends on what you plan to use it for. A finish like you described would look beautiful and for parking cars on it should suffice. But if you have plans to weld, grind, or use other metal working tools, not sure it would hold up well. We decided on porcelain tile. I feel more comfortable...

Help - Slab does not meetup with poured frost foundation.

I hope this worked out as well. Worthy of consideration. If you are paying for this out of pocket and don't feel comfortable confronting your contractor, then you might want to consider hiring a independent inspector to review each phase of this project. It will take the pressure off of you to...

    Crawlspace lighting?

We installed 14 lights in our crawlspace. I used a power strip located next to the entrance so I can flip the power on and off. The strip is plugged it into a outdoor rated GFI plug. Then took a heavy duty extension cord and cut the female end off; wired it into the first J box and plugged the...

Another generator thread (transfer switches, portable vs. standby whole house)

When calculating load be sure to check the startup current draw. In numerous cases, it could be dramatically higher. As an example, we have a grinder pump for the sewage system. At startup, it draws 6,500 watts. During operation, it drops to 500 watts.

    Salt Air and Standby Generators

Thank you. We have been taking a serious look at the Kohler brand even though their tech said they did not test specifically for salt spray. We live on an island so service support will be challenging. Having confidence a generator will be reliable is high on our list.

    Salt Air and Standby Generators

You're correct. Wiring and their connectors is a concern also. The electrical contractor will be asked that question. We are looking into solar. But that may have to come a few years down the road. I'm not thrilled about 5 years. If that's all we get. But considering these conditions, we'll have...

    Salt Air and Standby Generators

We are in the market for a 20kw standby generator. Just not sure what brand will withstand salt air. We live by the water. I understand the enclosure is well protected. But salt air will enter through the louvers. It's the fasteners and brackets internal to the unit we worry about. Kohler says...

Need opinions on new garage roof

Go with two 8' x 8' garage doors and have them swing out (Carriage door or barn style).

    Cramming cars into 22x19x15...

Consider swing out doors (aka Carriage Doors) assuming you have area in front to open them. A 2 post lift may require a thicker than normal concrete slab. So you may want to speak with a lift representative on their requirements.

Setting 4 corners of detached garage

We live on an island so our cost will be really distorted from what you will pay. But three years ago we paid $800 for both the survey and elevations. Hope this helps.

Setting 4 corners of detached garage

Not only did we have the property surveyed, but we had them include all elevations in respect to the land. Why? Because the land is sloped and our structure went up 30'. The city Planning Department set a 30 foot height restriction. We were able to squeeze the building in just under that...

Going for a retro look eaves on new garage.

Sorry about that. It is hard to see. Total exposure to each section is 2-3/4". We used long ones. Joints were covered by trim boards.

Going for a retro look eaves on new garage.

We used cedar tongue and groove for the eaves. Very expensive but well worth it. Pre-painted the material. Here's a photo.

How to reduce rain spatter on garage doors

Good point. Looks like some additional research is needed. Thanks.

How to reduce rain spatter on garage doors

That rain diverter is pretty cool. Maybe there's a way to integrate them with the header trim. I'll need to speak with the contractor. Thanks.
