My lady asked me to finish the basement of our new-to-us house and build a bar before I started working on the man-cave corner of the shop. I'm more of a mechanic than a carpenter, but it's turning out okay for our needs. Now I need to build a small bar and add a TV/Stereo in the shop! :-)
I'm a wrench and not a construction guy Tejay, so I was asking opinions of those that know way more than me so I don't screw it up. I guess it's like asking about favorite oils in the mechanic world, 10 people have about 15 different opinions. :-)
Thanks Finn. Went out last night and bought some of the DFK 3-1/8" T-25 screws as mentioned above. They seem quite a bit "beefier" than the 2.5" screws I began using. So my first five girts have 3" nails from my nail gun AND 2.5" screws toe-nailed in. Might just put a few DFK 3-inchers in...
Correct, and for a couple of reasons. One, the previous owner has already ran the electric tubes/boxes/etc and connected them to the ceiling joists and posts. Stretching them out over whatever panel I use (1/2, 3/4 etc) would be easier than moving them outward by the width of a 2x4 PLUS the...
Good to know! Thanks Finn and Falcoln!
I'm more comfortable with pistons, oil, gears, etc. I'm learning this construction stuff as I go so this forum is a great resource!
Off to get some 3+ inch construction screws tonight!
So, I haven't heard anyone say yet that toe-nailing the girts in is...
Okay guys, finally closed on the house and working in my shop. 32x52 shop has blown insulation installed and I started hanging horizontal girts last night. First one was 36" on center from the ground and the next three were 24" on center. I started toe-nailing with a nail gun and 3" nails...
Thanks for the detailed response Chris. Makes sense and, yes, I would like not only to hang things from the walls but also to make a small 10x20 "finished" area adjacent to the back wall for a finished floor, 7' bar, TV, fridge, coffeemaker, etc.
All,
We close on our new shop (even has a house on the lot) in December. I'm planning my moves for when I take ownership, and one thing involves finishing the shop walls in either OSB or drywall. I only have pics to go by, but it SEEMS like the sprayed insulation makes for a lot of uneven...
