    DIY Economizer for Garage?

Hey guys, Recently we've had some summer weather. Typical day here in southern Indiana is seeing highs in the low 90's and lows about 70. My 3 car attached garage gets pretty oppressive and stays that way. The 3 ton ac for the bonus room above (also cools attached breezeway) has been...

Directional boring? Anyone DIY a conduit under a drive/road?

Depends. If this is actually on the original posters property then it's very likely he doesn't need any sort of easement or approvals. If its past his property corners....then he would be much better off letting the fiber company deal with it. If this is one of those "rails to trails"...

Directional boring? Anyone DIY a conduit under a drive/road?

Talk to them and find out why it is $6000. Don't assume. If that trail is built on a railroad road bed it has enough ballast under it to hold up a train. I wouldn't attempt any sort of DIY bore.

Air System Piping-- don't overthink it (lessons from my recent project)

Man, if that's you "not overthinking"? Good lord. Here's my thought: Use big enough diameter black iron and you won't need a loss calculation because your volume will be high enough you won't ever have a problem...and it will still be cheaper to build than much smaller competitive...

    Walkout Basement Cover Door

If keeping the drain from clogging fixes your problem, I highly suggest this "Drain Defender" gizmo. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z3XS5TX?tag=atomicindus08-20 My mom's house had a single 4" drain for a large patio that would clog with leaves after every storm, resulting in the (not very level)...

Backyard shelter house instead of auxiliary garage. Dumb idea?

Our church has beams similar in our 1992 sanctuary addition. This isn't it, but same type of thing. Glulam.

Backyard shelter house instead of auxiliary garage. Dumb idea?

Very weird that this thread got resurrected today as my wife and I have discussed this twice in the last 2 days. To answer your question though: No. It hasn't gone any further. I did run some calculations on the solar roof idea, and it seems to be a non-starter as the break even is more...

Review - R134A valve core changer (Schrader Valve tool)

The valve cores included in the kit are not very good. The ones I got from my local parts store were designed for ac and worked great. The manifold set doesn’t thread on, it clamps on with quick connectors. Why would you want to service it with the valve cores removed? You’ve lost...

Review - R134A valve core changer (Schrader Valve tool)

I used standard leak detection fluid as I would use to check gas piping. It didn’t really foam up like it would on a natural gas leak. I had to wait until the foam cleared out of the fluid sitting in the vertical test ports. Then I could see bubbles appearing around the Schrader valve stems...

Review - R134A valve core changer (Schrader Valve tool)

Hey guys. I'm sure some of you already have one of these, but I didn't and now I do. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CBVBVZ48?tag=atomicindus08-20 It's $25 and comes with 3 tools. A standard schrader valve wrench and 2 valve changing tools. The valve changing tools allow you to replace...

    Heating/Cooling shop

If it was me, and AC was a priority, I'd go with the mini-split. If you put a bunch of money into a garage/shop build....the HVAC system is not a huge % of the cost but can make a big difference not only in the comfort level of the space, but if you want to even be out there. I was out in my...

    Mini-split and "central heating system"

Agree with Kaizen, just try "Heat Pump" in that space and let it fly. My guess is they are looking for people that are just heating with space heaters/pellet stoves/wood stoves/ventless heaters/etc. and don't have a "for real" solution....which in my view Mini Split heat pumps are. Seen many...

High bay LED with 5-foot lamp cord

I've got an extension ladder. I can haul it up the stairs in the barn, extend it to near max (15-feet), then lean it against the masonry chimney that goes floor to ceiling in the barn attic. Then climb up the ladder and work from there? It's not going to be ideal that's for certain...

High bay LED with 5-foot lamp cord

Guys, I was given a 150W LED high bay light that I want to install in the attic of my barn. Where I'm going to mount it will be about 14 feet above the floor, hanging from the rafters. I'm not super comfortable with installing a receptacle up there as getting a ladder set up for access...

Small hole in top of septic field.

I love how in the diagram the ground water flows past the fresh water well first and then on towards where the septic effluent will merge with the groundwater. Curious how they determine direction of flow of either. I have noted over the years that towns often use the same stream or river to...
