Nice anvil! Check out the book "Anvils in America" by Richard Postman. Your anvil does look like a Trenton--made by The Columbus Forge and Iron Co. in Ohio. If I remember correctly, the number on the left indicates the weight and the serial number on the right indicates it was manufactured...
I got to use my punch and chisel set today at work---and HOLY COW :bounce: those things are NICE! Through a series of unfortunate events, and as a last resort, I was using a chisel to try and extract a broken bolt.
The chisel did a wonderful job, stayed sharp, and basically took everything...
If you're interested in engraving, the cheapest and easiest way to start is by drawing--and then more drawing, and then more, and just to be safe, draw some more after that. If you can't draw it, you can't engrave it. The engraving itself is more about time on the tool and getting comfortable...
