I just got this installed and it works perfectly. It's EXACTLY what I was looking for. The door opens, a light comes on. The door closes, the light shuts off. Right now I just have lamp plugged into it, but I plan on doing something a little more discreet. Thanks for all of the suggestions...
Ok, so I don't need another hot wire going to the switch box because it's already there for the light. It's THHN wire so that should work out. Thanks!

Actually, it doesn't. The wall switch only operates the light. So my guess is (without having looked at it yet) that the power is in the ceiling box and therefore I'll have to pull two wires. One into the new switch from the hot wire and one back to the ceiling box to connect to the fan wire...
Ok, good to know. Mine is in conduit as well.
I haven't started trying to figure out the wiring yet. I assume that since the fan can be controlled with the chain regardless of light switch position that the power is at the ceiling fan and not at the light switch, right?
I don't think I'm crazy, but I don't think my wife agrees. So I guess that could go either way.
I've seen those switches and I'm not really interested in a combo switch. Two of the rooms are the kids' rooms. I'd rather make it simple (for them, not necessarily me).
Thanks for the help...
The house I'm living in was built with no light fixtures in the bedrooms. The switch next to the door controlled an outlet. The last owners had ceiling fans installed and wired them so that the light switch now operates the light on the ceiling fan. In order to operate the fan itself, you...
Thanks for all the leads/suggestions. I finally found what I think I'm looking for. I'm ordering it this week and will post how well it works once I get it installed.
Entry switch transmitter and lamp plug-in receiver
Much closer to what I'm looking for. I assumed there was a part I could use that was designed for this type of application. This lead me to possibly using something like a ceiling fan canopy. But I'm not spending $25 each for them. If I could find a cheap one (not ornate) preferably in...
No, I didn't order cages. Anything going in or out of the racks should be parallel to the lights. I suppose if I bust one somehow, I'll wish I had. But for now, no.
I have boxes in the ceiling and conduit in between all boxes per code. I now plan on using BX between the box and the middle of the light strip and hanging it from small chains on either end.
What I would really like to know is how to make the cut out in the ceiling look cleaner/neater/less...
