This sort of depends if I decide to build it to lift a car to the space then 2 tons. If it is work woodshop only purposes then maximum weight would be 1 1/2 tons.

I like the idea. I don't there is any such thing as overthinking. You could hook up the sensor to trip a timed light (like a security light) which could have a seperate switch attached to it to disable it when not needed.
