Where can I buy a fire rated door for 2x6 construction that doesn't cost big $$$

Reduce the framing just at the door to 2x4 construction. It will still be a two-hour partition.

Can you help me with my garage project?

Nice, How do you intend to use the area not accessed by garage doors. Consider switching the door to the left and the windows to the right. It may make better use of wall space. Any sections from your architect? Why not have windows on the gable ends?

Are these flat-files a good use for tool storage?

I bought some recently, found on CL, for $50 per section. Keep looking. These look like the faces were just painted.

Dumpster Rental -- tips or tricks?

Jack, I've rented a number of dumpsters for a couple of extreme renovations and, since I'm pretty cheap too, I try to do the following each time I rent one: 1. Put blocks under the lift end of the dumpster so any water drains toward the door. 2. Cover the dumpster with a tarp and it tie down at...

    How do I finish this?

I would not cut the corners. I'd finish it with a chamfered corner and consider a built-up crown mold to hide it. You could add a picture hanger detail to crown mold for your wife's art studio.

Prep work for a concrete slab

mastech, What will be in the garage besides the lift? How heavy are your vehicles? The slab should be min. 4" thick, 5" for any light industrial use. Subgrade thickness should be a minimum 4", compacted. At the lift posts the concrete should be thicker, not just the subgrade. And the thickness...

Jacking up a garage to renovate it?

If you decide you want to increase the height, check your local building code for the maximum height allowed for "accessory buildings" (i.e. garages, sheds). In my town, it's 15' max. Over that height requires a variance.

    lexan or plexiglass?

Early in my architecture career, I used to make a lot of scale models of buildings and used a lot of plexiglass. We used plexi knives like snowphun describes. If the plex was thicker, we'd score both sides before snapping. We also would use a veneer blade on the table saw to cut thicker sheets.

name ideas for a girls shop??

There's no reason why you can't brand yourself as more than one business under one roof. One for general auto repair and the other for building hot rods. Texafilly Auto Repair and Greasy Girls Hot Rods.

    dissasembly of garage

nox. I have a barn/garage (see my FNG intro) that the previous owner moved to the property. I was originally a one lane, wood frame bowling alley. He cut it into large panels, moved it and bolted it back together onto concrete slab. I understand from his family that he expected to move it...

Has your age finally got you stopped????

ToolLover, No man should fade away. Keep busy. Don't mope around. Someone with your experience should be teaching young bucks how it's done. Contact the local schools: community college, high school, tech school, even art schools, to see if you can help out with shop, auto class. Start your own...

OT - Drywall types for bathroom remodel.?

No, probably just the shower. Talk to your plumber about how he's going to install the shower pan. PVC liner and mud set, or pre-fab pan. So that you know how tie in the pan liner with the vapor barrier. Add photos as you demo/build/finish. Your project isn't strictly garage related, but some...

OT - Drywall types for bathroom remodel.?

I would use a moisture resistant drywall on all wall and ceiling surfaces, with a vapor barrier between drywall and the insulation. Where is the vapor barrier, if there is one, on the exterior walls of your house? You do not want barriers on both the outside and inside faces. In the shower/tub...
