Brand loyalists, what other-brandtool was so compelling you made a one-off exception?

Almost all of my 20+ Cordless tools are Milwaukee m18 or m12. The one cordless exception is my cordless Ingersoll Rand 1/2” 90° impact. I also have an m12 cordless ratchet (3/8) but it doesn’t have nearly the output of the IR 90°.

    what's the best 1/2 Impact?

I don’t know the actual decibel output of any of my Milwaukee impacts... but the noise they make is generally only for a few seconds at a time, but my air compressor seems louder and is definitely a far longer duration. With air you have the compressor noise in addition to the impact noise. If...

    Milwaukee M18 Fuel Sawzaw

The sawzall is great, but if you’re using the tool continuously for long periods of time, then yes, it will go through batteries. I’ve never used an m18 battery smaller than an xc3.0... but I would imagine a 1.5 would be flashing empty rather quickly. If you invest in a 4 or 5 ah battery, you...

    Best maintenance tool bag?

I’m a repair mechanic for Schindler. I keep have several different bags/boxes on the truck... My main “go-to” bag is a veto pro-pac backpack and I have a large clc backpack set up for escalators. But I’m also working out of a dually longbed with a lift gate so I’ve got lots of room. Good luck...

Which is louder, M12 Fuel Ratchet or Aircat 800 air ratchet?

Air compressor by itself is way louder, air ratchet is likely to be louder as well.

    Proto Tools....are they ****?

In my experience, proto tools are second to none when it comes to reliability, service life, and overall quality. I’m a mechanic in an industrial trade, which is a rough environment for any tool. I’ve witnessed more tool failures than I care to admit, most of which are caused by misuse or...

Local, independently owned old-timey tool stores

Hayward tool on foothill. Hayward, CA It’s huge. It’s a bit pricey and the people in there aren’t very helpful, but I go there rather often because they have a good Selection. I’ve been to K119, it’s awesome.

Do you carry a pocket knife?

Always. Benchmade mini-grip or pardue (or some other BM) when I’m off work. When I’m at work I’ve always got a folder/flipper of some kind (currently a Ruike 801), in the front pant pocket, as well as an Olfa 9mm snap-off in my shirt pocket, a standard razor knife in the toolbag, and a Mora...

    Are Armature's interchangeable?

Without knowing the exact specs of the armature windings, you’re essentially just guessing. Physical dimensions mean very little. How exactly did you determine that the armature failed? Are the windings shorted/grounded? Unfortunately it may be time for a new roto hammer.

    Why is Everything Spline Drive

I pretty much exclusively use proto spline drive ratchet wrenches on everything... I didn’t choose them specifically BECAUSE they’re spline drives... they’re just overall great wrenches... I haven’t ever encountered a spline drive fastener, but I use them on standard hex fasteners every day...

US/European made stubby ratcheting wrench set

Check proto, I have several of their Taiwan manufactured stubby reversibles and they’re extremely nice. They may have some US made ones as well, but idk.

Milwaukee M12 rotary tool (2460) vs Dremel

I actually bought an m12 today... I already use all m12 and m18 tools, so that was a factor, but I was looking at the cordless dremels on display at HD because Dremel has always made a great product. I need a rotary tool occasionally to engrave data tags, and for some minor...
