Plumbing Drum Trap - How and Why would this be used?

I cut one out of a lab at Cornell in about ‘72-3. This back in the day of mercury thermometers for temp..Had a hand on the bottom of it. When it came loose it took me to the floor. It was filled with Mercury from decades of broken t-moms. We then went to the basement with a bucket and about...

Cast Iron to PVC union, Plumbers what am i looking at here?

Well the old way, prior to the Fernco, was to take a torch and melt the lead out, then pull the compressed oakum. Clean the hub,Insert your pvc, install and compress the new oakum then, as a home owner get lead wool, insert it on top of the oakum. Get a couple pieces of wood to make inside and...

Whole House/Attic Fan for metal barn question.

Not sure if this will handle what you want to do as it is a newer product by them, but they make excellent equipment. Worth a look. https://tjernlund.com/product/d-strat-compact-high-velocity-destratification-ceiling-fans/

Rigging for lifting pallets and other options for lifting stuff to 2nd floor?

A friend stores a couple of his old cars up on the second floor of his barn. He has a lift that he runs up and rolls them off. Nice, safe (as long as you load it correctly, but that is the case with any lift mechanism) and effective. How important is the sq ft for such an animal in your space?

    venting car exhaust from shop

Not sure if they make anything for this app, but Tjernlund make a lot of good ventilating products. I’d give them a call and ask. On the flip side of your question, I’d be looking into a really good CO detector

Help needed with structural details of steel entry gate build.

I built this gate for my daughters families house. I used 2x3x.019 and 2x uprights. It has a wheel. The gate is not used frequently. The stone clad post is the issue on this or about any gate. We do not know how it was built so I throw the laser on it on occasion. So far it is okay, but given...

    Welding thin metal

Not to go completely off the rails, but I just can’t deal with the striker fired weapons. I claim dinosaur status as a result, but due to early training and the bias that has gone with it I prefer an external safety. I’ve tried the Glock’s in the past and being kinda simple, this one has a...

Drainage at ledger board of deck?

LAst summer I had to remount the deck on our place the PO had directly attacked the deck flush to the siding with predictable results. I removed 4 courses of the deck, short cut the joist and installed a proper ledger board after replacing the rot all the way into the rim joint. I went to a...

Installed New Outdoor Faucet, Leak at Joint, What to do?

Two turns seems optomistic regardless of what tape/dope you use. Another thing to consider is the condition of the of the receiving female thread. I regularly run a thread chaser into the fitting to clean it up some so you get a good mating of the threads.

Capping an unused Chimney on a flat roof

I had an old stone chimney that had a SS liner and a woodstove connected that was the primary heat.. The chimney was smack in the middle of the place. I tore it down to the foundation and it allowed a completely open floor plan. Your plan to simply cap is the simplest, but sit for a minute and...

Solid torsion bar for OH door?

Agree that the solid is better for the side-arm opener. I installed one on my door a couple monthsago After having assisted my SIL doing same on his door. His has a solid bar. Mine the pipe type. 5 or 6 weeks into the change noticed the delay in the door lifting and not running all the way up...

Installing a Runner on Stairs - Yes or No?

Descending a set of steps in a customers home aftrer finishing the last of the punch list items with the owner my boot caught on their carpeted stair. I broke my ankle. It was a poor choice of carpet for a stair as it had to much loft.
