I've had both a 6" and a 8" long bed jointer. As far as upgrading from a standard 6" I find length more important than width. The 8" I had (a Grizzly) was so long though it was impractical for my 2-car garage shop so it had to eventually go. You should really ask yourself what you need it for...
Interesting...I recently received 2 full sets. 1 in chrome - everything was perfect, impeccable finish, quality, etc. The other set was in satin and 2 of the box ends are off center...1 so much so that I want to get it replaced. I had never read of any complaints on these until I saw your post.
The chrome is great, and in fact appears to have a better fit/finish than the matte. One of my satin has a closed end off center (significantly so IMO) - I plan on calling and getting them to replace it later this week.
