Insulating stick-built ceiling - need some guidance

This sounds like a reasonable solution. What's the best way to add a "tie" when there are no rafters in between the existing ties? They would be sort of fake ties but I'm not sure what to screw them to.

Insulating stick-built ceiling - need some guidance

Ahh I’m sorry - I just went out and measured and the rafters and ties are both 32” on center. I don’t know why I had 4’ in my head…

Yes! Not already insulated though... And by office I meant studio - I just didn’t clarify there.

The rafters are also 4 ft on center and I’m not concerned about sound transmission really.

This is an excellent idea actually

Insulating stick-built ceiling - need some guidance

Not planning on using drywall for a number of reasons which is why I'm trying to figure out how to keep the insulation held up.

Insulating stick-built ceiling - need some guidance

Could I just skip the extra ties and do the strapping every 8 inches and call it a day? Guess it might sag a bit.

Insulating stick-built ceiling - need some guidance

I have a 20x17 detached garage with an old stick built ceiling that I'm trying to finish up as a recording studio here in Southern California. I'd like to install a mini-split AC but first I'll need to insulate. My plan is to insulate the walls and ceiling with rockwool and cover with...

Detached garage with single 15A circuit - how to add AC (is there any way to install a mini-split?)

Just left for a trip but will take some photos when I return. There is no disconnect. I believe just a junction box.

Well yea haha. I wouldn't do that until I knew for certain that the wire was 10 gauge or whatever. Of course.

I could do that if this sounds too complicated for DIY. Maybe an electrician could help me determine the gauge of that overhead though.

Fair questions. The garage has only one outlet and one light currently so I’ll be starting over with all the wiring over there. It’s about 15x18 ft and is insulated. I’m not sure the size of the overhead but there are four separated wires running overhead - two hots coming from the 2pole breaker.

This is a good point…I guess it’s possible the overhead wires are already thick enough gauge that I could just change that breaker to 30A at the service box? Is that doable? And if so, how could I determine the gauge of the current overhead wires?

Detached garage with single 15A circuit - how to add AC (is there any way to install a mini-split?)

I have a detached garage with no subpanel - just a single 15A circuit pulled from the main house breaker (overhead, not underground). I'd like to convert the space into an office and I'm sure 15A will be plenty for that (computer, printer, display, a few lights, maybe a tv). However, I live in...
