    Ship maul

I learned that the top mall, like the one I have, has another use. In the novel Moby ****, captain Ahab issues the order "Stand over that helmsman with a top-maul!" In the book, Ahab is relentlessly driving the ship closer and closer to Moby ****, demanding that the helmsman "brace sharper up"...

    Very Early Crescent Wrench?

I wonder why the thumb screw would be off center in the 4" Crescent wrench?

    Very Early Crescent Wrench?

I noticed that in the 1914 Hardware Dealers Magazine advertisement for the New Crescent 15" size wrench, that they used a picture of a 6" Crescent wrench. I guess it was so new that they didn't have a picture of it yet!

    Very Early Crescent Wrench?

I believe that you are right, that it does indicate very early production. And I believe you're also right about people perhaps changing the adjusters from one wrench to another. I could see someone back then breaking their crescent wrench, perhaps hitting it with a 5 lb sledge hammer, and then...

    Very Early Crescent Wrench?

I will have to disagree with you that "The cross knurled adjusters are unique to the Patent Pending Crescent wrenches." I have two very early 15-in Crescent wrenches. One of them says patent pending, the other says patented. They both have cross knurled adjusters. I've even seen large patent...

More than just adjustable wrenches, post up your vintage Crescent tools

In my opinion, because it is not new and can never be new again, I would pretty much leave it as is. The most that I would do is to rub it somewhat with some fine steel wool.

My small but growing collection of Wizard tools (all Western Auto welcome)

It's interesting how large the heads of the wrenches are in comparison to the size of the openings. I wonder if it's because the alloy is not very strong. You definitely wouldn't be able to fit them into a tight spot.

More than just adjustable wrenches, post up your vintage Crescent tools

Those look just like my dad's pair, with the black metal above the red handles, except my dad's are Master Mechanic. Perhaps Crescent made them for Master Mechanic. His have always been missing one of the red handle grips.

    Very Early Crescent Wrench?

The first two pictures are of the patent pending 15-in wrench. The next picture is the advertisement showing that it came out in January of 1914. The following pictures are of my 15-in patent pending crescent wrench that is of a finer quality (not only because it was beat with a hammer less!)...

    Very Early Crescent Wrench?

Here's my 15" patent pending Crescent wrench with a cross-knurled thumbscrew. I've been trying for some time to find a way to date and identify the earliest Crescent wrenches. The 15-in crescent wrench first came out in 1914, as can be seen in the advertisement I posted (I find it interesting...

Lean-To Addition on Gable End - Ventilation & Insulation

You would have vented soffit at the tails and you could have standard roof vents up towards the existing garage. If it ties in on the gable of the existing garage, then I would think that you could even vent it through there by cutting some of the existing siding out, basically connecting the...

Lean-To Addition on Gable End - Ventilation & Insulation

Sounds like the spray foam is your only option. What dimension will your rafters be? What will be the height where they connect to the garage? Will a 7 ft ceiling be enough room for you? What type of roofing are you thinking about using? In your area I think your only choice is spray foam if you...

Foam organizer trays that tools come in these days. Do they hold up?

Do you have any pictures of them? Are you talking about white styrofoam? The one pictured was my dad's 1/2" Craftsman torque wrench that he always kept in the white foam that it came in. I think it must be 30 years old at least.

Here's my 6" Wizard adjustable wrench. It's the same as Post #78, except that it has a C mark on the handle at the top. It's pretty smooth and tight, but the forging does look a little rough as can be seen in the close-up picture.

Will closed cell spray foam prevent condensation issues?

I believe it will stop condensation issues by acting as both an air barrier and a moisture/vapor barrier. Obviously you need to stop the warm moist air from contacting the cold underside of the metal. If you were to do it, I'd wait on installing your sound insulation and see how the spray foam...
