    The VISES of Garage Journal

Here’s a vise I’ve been after for a couple years now. I’ve had a Holland’s 18 before but it only had three mounting feet. I’ve had a couple of the reed 108s with the 4 bolt bases and I love the look of those and I’ve had a yost with the same base. I’ve always wanted a Holland’s with the 4 bolt...

He was into blacksmithing tools and vises but Then sold everything off. I sold all of his vises(which he probably had less than 30 but had some nice big ones) and some of his anvils. He used all the money to buy more firearms. One less person to worry about when buying 😂

Thanks man! The funny part is, this is the third 408 I’ve had in my garage. The first two belonged to a buddy of mine. He bought the green one that was on here a couple tomes. I restored that for him and then he sold it to another remember on here so I’m sure you all have seen what it looks like...

I had a 2010 Honda Crosstour with the hatchback that I would use for getting vises. It was great. I graduated college and got an accord with a trunk and it’s not as good for hauling. I’m fixing up an old 96 dodge with dad and that’s gonna be my vise hauling vehicle but it’s not done yet so I had...

Thanks shift. It really is a hog man. It’s even a pain picking it up in pieces lol. Here’s how I got it in the car. Most cars have the false floor and made of like 1/4” fiber bord or something and then the spare tire. So I made up a basket to hold the weight and distribute it to the edge of the...

I wanted to share my most recent find with you guys. This is a reed 408, 8” jaws, 320 pounds. This guy lived in a big tire shop since the 60s and then eventually went to the owners home after the shop was sold. The vise was made in 742, and is currently the only known 408 made in the 4 bolt base...

Thanks man! I usually just pull the vise apart because they're much easier to move around in pieces. Im not sure what Im going to mount it to yet. Still need to figure that out lol. Whatever it is, it needs to be big

I havent posted in a while but I picked up a sweet Yost vise on Friday. Its an 8.5" vise and weighs 265 pounds. At first I thought it was a No 99. But after doing some cleaning a found a really wore down 108 numbers underneath the yost name. I think the 99 is just a part number or something...

Oh one more thing. I bought a 102 a while back that has the 3 bolt base. I mean its cool and all but I would rather have one with a 4 bolt base so I had my buddy design it in Cad and hes going to put a 4 bolt base on it and we are going to try having it casted. Also I was looking at the Reed...

Been kinda busy these past couple of weeks. My brother Machined a new meatball for my Reed 108. The original one was in horrible condition and actually had an oval worn into the handle hole. We cut the old one off, drilled and tapped into the meatball and spindle and used all thread to join the...

VA what do you think the 408 is worth? Just curious what the actual value between collectors is.
