Electrical service to back shop question

This you don't need to up size it but i like to so #4 It will run with the feeders all the way to new panel and terminate on the ground buss (not the neutral). A secondary wire #6 bare solid copper will then go out to 2 ground rods spaced 6' apart min at the building no more than 20'. This is...

    Will 40 amp be sufficient..

Breaker listing is not cumulative, other wise you would only be able to have 10-20 amp breakers on a 200a panel (per phase). Yes you will be fine I have a 50 amp welder 50 amp range and 50 amp hot tub plus all my house stuff plus all the heat. You don't pull 60 amps all the time

Electrical service to back shop question

If that is not a problem then triplex URD and a use ground will be fine. I belive (off the top of my head) you could go 1 up in cable size...

Convert old style 240 to twist style

The pic on the left is still used for specific 240v equipment A/C, some lab equipment, doc office equipment and compressors. It has 2 hot wires and a ground. the new plug you are wanting is 2 hots, 1 neutral, and 1 ground. So what are the wires in the box, when was it installed and how far away...
