Mine is also doing the same thing on one side. I noticed it last fall and it doesn't seem to have gotten any worse this summer. This was my third summer with it.

I use a M18 blower with a stubby nozzle to dry my car after washing and blow water out of the cracks. The smaller form factor, even if it still has a M18 battery, is a welcome addition.

I don't think it's a screw up. Returning a "free" battery for a prorated return value has been a thing for at least 5 years. They are well aware of it and have had ample time to fix it.
