I'd put a membrane over the tar and a french drain around the back side to get rid of future trapped water.....it's so easy to eliminate the water problem when the ground is open...

I just read your whole post for inspiration with the building I am planning to build. You do great work and I love to see you training the kids at the same time. My head is now full of some pretty neat ideas thanks to you, but I better not share them with my wife....I might scare her away!
