100 year old doug fir vs modern spruce/pine/fir

Back in high school in the 70s I worked for my building contractor dad -- grunt work, labor, ditches, demo. One of the worst jobs was salvaging old Doug fir framing lumber, including pulling nails. Impossible to clean up.

    Show your new tool arrivals

Stopped on the way home from work at Tractor Supply to get some eye bolts for a project. A new display had out a bunch of Makita and DeWalt corded and battery tools that had been display units. Corded tools all had the cords cut -- all about $20 -- and a nice Makita cordless XAG 04 angle...

A Savage Inventory of the Tools That Actually Matter

Easy. 1995 Craftsman contractors table saw, bought new. Used (and perhaps abused) more than any other tool to make things, not simply repairs. Done it all with this thing. Currently making a toy barn for grandson #1 out of scrap hardwood. Is based on one of my first table saw projects, a barn...

    Aluminum trailer ramps

As a concluding follow up, I did purchase the 5" aluminum ramps. Probably shoulda gone with the 6 footers, but these have dual purposes. One is to ramp up to a platform for working under the low slung cars, and the second is to hook onto my trailer to load my 1200 lb zero turn. The hook on the...

    Best Tool for Weld Prep?

Why is a die grinder safer than an angle grinder? Is it just the smaller size that makes it easier to handle?

Do I need a push mower with a zero turn mower?

If the ZT can't mow it, it does not get cut. Haven't used the Lawn Boy in 15 years, don't own a string trimmer. Filled in/regraded the roadside ditch to reduce the angle so the mower can cut across the fall line.

Ever buy something you didn't expect to use, but use it all the time?

A super cheap (on sale) mini-pick set from HF. It was there by the checkout counter, like a $1.99, so why not? It is amazing how much I use them.

    Tool belt options

I've got a tool apron, a tool vest, at least 3 different full size tool belts (some from my son), and a variety of belts with pouches. Picked 'em up along the way. I tend to not like any of them, but will overall pick a 40 year old leather tool belt or the apron. The apron if I know the project...

Cabinet for Small Parts Storage Cases

Not sure why I have not commented here earlier. I don't have pics at the moment, but I picked up a typical metal office mail sorter / paper holder for about $5 at an auction. I use HF parts bins and cardboard boxes that hold reams of paper in the slots. with the cardboard boxes I fold in the...
