I received a Gerber Gator Semi-Serrated as an Eagle Scout gift from my Troop almost 20years ago. It doesn't see daily carry, but if I go out in the woods hunting or camping it is for sure in my pack. Daily carry is a Case Trapper lock with Walnut handles.

Based on your description the kid has a pretty good head on his shoulders and is willing to get the tools that he wants to do the job he needs to do. With the hobbies you described, especially auto-x, his tools need to be mobile. Why not get him a portable tool box. Like a Pelican 1460. It will...
