    Nice setup! I've used nichrome wire that I bought from McMaster-Carr. I think stainless wire would work pretty well, also.

    I have 16 and 18 on my late model Dodge (Daimler Chrysler) and used to use 11 on older VW's.

    Exactly like mine. I did buy it used, although I paid more than $1. New orange one for old black one.

    How to hold metal ball for drilling?

    Do you have a lathe? If so, chuck it up. Otherwise, I would go with drilling a hole in some wood, but just slightly smaller than the ball, smack it in and go from there. Yep, grind a small flat on it before using your center drill.
