    The VISES of Garage Journal

I acquired a Parker 974A that cleaned up pretty well. The Vise Info spreadsheet does not list a weight for this vise. I put it on a scale and came up with 60 lbs.

    Vise Info Thread

I spotted this Hollands 23 in an online auction too far away for me to think about acquiring it. But I did notice that its Vise Info Spreadsheet entry links to photos that show an example without the swivel base. So here are two photos of a Hollands 23 with its swivel base.

Thank you OTG. Now I know the real story.

    Vintage S-K Tools

While on the topic of beaver tails, here is a 1/2" Artisan, a Brazil ratchet produced for Gambles: And here is a somewhat strange one. It appears to be a Brazil 4070, but it carries no markings whatsoever! I wonder what the story was behind this one:

    Vintage S-K Tools

I have enjoyed reading all these informative posts and thought I would try to make a modest contribution to this thread. I recently acquired a 45170 ratchet, 3/8" drive. It carries the SK logo and number, but it is housed in a beaver-tail that I associate with SK's Brazil private label...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I was recently fortunate to acquire a Stephens #2 Vise with the toggle lever lock. The Vise Spreadsheet lacks photos for this entry so here are a few: It is a complicated vise with a spring-loaded dynamic jaw that holds the work piece and the toggle locks it in place. I'm not taking this...

    Old bench vise information please

Those V markings and "Eclipse" have in the past been associated with Milwaukee Tool and Equipment for these exposed screw utility vises. The information in the Vise spreadsheet for this line of vises is thin, though.

More Whatzits--Can we make this the official Whatzit thread?

Thank you FJ. I took a stroll out to the shop to look it over again. The spinner handle does pull up and that locks the anvil. It's not spring loaded so you need to push it in and out to change function. I continue to be amazed at the knowledge of the forum members.

More Whatzits--Can we make this the official Whatzit thread?

No, it does not ratchet, just spins. It was part of a lot of tools at an auction. The lot had no "theme" to its contents, so there was no clue there to help identify it.

More Whatzits--Can we make this the official Whatzit thread?

This one has me stumped. The red handle rotates the 1/2" anvil that takes a socket. The chromed shaft is long and ends in a wedge. No markings to be found anywhere.

    Vise Info Thread

One of these vises appeared in the Minneapolis CL recently. The lister was asking for information about who made it. I responded with a link to this page. And here is a photo or two from the listing:

2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

In the post war years there was a period of time when things were marked " WESTERN GERMANY". I have had tools with that wording. Try that with a squint.

    The Oldest Prentiss Vise

Here is more information on my vise: It has a jaw width of 4.5 inches. I can't see any stamping on the end of the slide but it is worn given its age. The swivel jaw and the base have matching numbers. I'm not sure I see dots by one of them but here are more photos and you can be the judge:

    The Oldest Prentiss Vise

I'll have to take a bit of time to respond to your questions as the Prentiss is out in the "Vise Vault" and not easily available. The photos were taken earlier when I was done cleaning and lubricating the unit. But I can say something about the nut retention. Let me begin by saying that I am...

    The Oldest Prentiss Vise

Early this spring I was fortunate enough to pick up what is obviously a Prentiss swivel jaw vise, although it was unmarked. When I took it apart to clean it up I noticed it had the "dog" style fastening. I noticed the dog retainer has an elongated hole which I presume is to allow some degree of...
