It be mud bed with slop,then Schluter membrane on top mud bed using Schluer’s All Set thin set. Next Schluter membrane on walls 5’ up. From 5’ up to 8’ will be Regard applying 3 coats. Most of this info comes from Schluter video except the Regard.

I watch YouTube year or two ago where deck builder had built a box around post. Example he ran say 2x6 in front of post from one joist to another, then put 2x6 on both sides of post. He use GRK multi screws to put all together. But this would require you to remove couple deck boards

Your going have flex or hard pipe connect to that, so for sake of help keep things from rattling I would make 1/8 gap all way around that sheetmetal box then caulk it. If that’s going have cold air going through it, you may need insulate around it
