What is interesting is that the old Richards Wilcox doors favored interior opening doors for this reason, but with small garages, this is a disadvantage.
I myself am in the Pacific NW, at sea level, so it only snows once or twice a year.
I ran into an issue on my old natural gas furnace last fall.
I was able to download the manual from an internet forum, and arrive at the probable solution. I could tell the old controller (Robert Shaw) had a relay that wouldn't stay closed (it was vibrating like crazy), and that forum posts...
Vintage trade catalogs
There are two vintage Richards Wilcox catalogs at this site, available in pdf. They are tremendous resource if you wish to have an appropriate garage door for a vintage house.
fwiw, R-W still makes most of the hardware for these doors...
If you want ideas for bifold designs, look at the Richards Wilcox vintage catalogs here:
https://archive.org/browse.php?field=subject&mediatype=texts&collection=buildingtechnologyheritagelibrary
btw, they are still in business and you can still buy similar hardware.
Re: That photo you posted from Real Carriage Door Co.:
They also make bifold carriage doors that open OUT, so they don't take up interior space at all.
