    Found this shoemaker's (cordwainer's ?) hammer at the flea today. Marked "solid steel, 3, Whitcher" The Frank W Whitcher Co was a major Boston wholesaler of shoe manufacturing supplies in the late 1800s into the early 1900s (F W Whitcher Co was taken over by USMC, the United Shoe Manufacturing...

    The patent for the 3-fold level/rule seems to be the Dec 8 1914 Pat # 1120443 and for the nifty end hook on the 12-fold 6ft rule; June 13 1916 Pat # 1186853

    Researching this level/rule I found Lufkin also made a similar 2 foot tri-fold rule with a level, No. 2062, and another 12" No.2051. God knows how many other models/makes were on the market... But more stuff to look out for :D

    The holes are a puzzle. Maybe to use a screwdriver for extra leverage when trying to loosen the head (My difficulty with a stuck head was resolved when I realized it was left hand thread ! )
