Flourescents come in colors rated in degrees of kelvin, The greater the number the whiter the light. 5000's are real white, 3500's are more yellow. Lumens per foot are the same but the brighter lamps are much easier to see with.

I have 10' ceilings with a 5x8 full bath and 12x13 office. I used joist hangers to drop the ceiling to 8' and floored both with 5/8 th plywood and boxed the rest with 1/4 inch. Makes great storage for long stock. The outside of these areas is covered with paneling and trimmed out.
