Thanks all, I ended up releasing the spring, resetting everything, and all is good. The marks were indeed from where the spring was previously, and it was wound about 3 rotations more than it should be.
No the opposite--the spring is so tight I can't get the door to come down. Here's a closeup of the right side collar. There is a wear mark, but not sure if that was from a pair of visegrips setting it up or where the spring used to be attached.
I do have the winding rods to release some...
Yeah, I was trying to avoid resetting the spring if possible, but also not wanting to make changes there because if nothing was loosened how would the tension change? I feel like I'm missing something else with the opener and don't want to reset the spring until I understand what is happening...
