I'm certainly no expert but I believe 30" girt spacing is fairly common. Pretty sure I saw Kyle @ RR Buildings do a building with 30" spacing.

i would imagine drilling a hole would give any water/moisture that happens to get trapped between the plastic protector and post a way to drain out. i've also seen a "short-sleeve" version of the plastic post protectors that don't even have a bottom. i think the idea with these is to minimize...
