I agree that any type of grease will work for the screw.
I tried BLO once and while I liked it well enough it took too long to cure for my taste. For bare metal parts I just wipe them down with some type of oil.

Removing the main nut gives you better access to the inside of the static jaw and dovetail to scrape out the caked on crud. If it were me I would remove it, but if the slide functions well as is you can probably leave it alone.
You may also want to consider the Makita LXT Sub-Compact line. These are readily available at Big Orange and are often on display so you can handle them before buying...
