Yup. The further away from the compressor the better it will work

Years ago we did something similar with a wooden library ladder. Ended up attaching a 3/4" pipe to the side of the ladder and attaching the rope to a small wheel/ pulley. It rode up the pipe as the stairs came down, reducing the leverage on the ladder. Worked a treat. We used an old spittoon...
