The rafters are on 16" centers. Looking up the ceiling joist spans it looks like I can use 2x8 or 2x10 and still span the 21 feet I need. This would allow me to hang drywall and insulate. Don't believe storage would be possible going this route. If I use 2x12, the costs would go up...

So I pulled a string line along a few of the longer rafter ties. It is about 3/8" deflection. Only one is a little worse, but that's due to a knot in the wood. If I remove everything that has been stored above these ties, could I run furring strips perpendicular to the 2x12's spaced 16" o.c...
