    Obviously done without a permit

I saved the light to put in my new garage. Classic, right?

    Storage questions

Hi all! Please be gentle. I'm a newb looking for some pointers for creating overhead storage in my newly built garage. It's 20x20 with 9ft walls and a gable roof. I want to take advantage of the extra space above but I'm not sure where to start. Traditional (retail) overhead racks seem...

    Garage floor is hopeless

I thought I'd post an update on this old thread. After a family of rats decided that my foundation would make a great nest (they burrowed from INSIDE the garage) I broke down and hired a contractor to build a new one from the ground up. It was a month of nail biting and hoping the weather...

    Obviously done without a permit

He said it would be costly to repair/replace but it doesn't affect the structure, and to keep in mind that a garage is just a shack where you park your car. I won't be rollerskating in there but I would like a level floor. It is the reason I was able to buy the house in the first place, because...

Because the inspector tested it, and it isn't.

    Garage floor is hopeless

Surprisingly, it is. Maybe because the damage is in the center and not so much at the edges. I've received four quotes to pour a new floor. Apparently it's not as uncommon as the first contractor wanted me to believe. I think he just wanted to sell me a new garage, which would be easier for...

    Obviously done without a permit

Oh, don't be such a killjoy. I already have plans to update the electric, as the home inspector indicated that this was not only a fire hazard but against local code. The seller is paying for it. The overhead light is not connected to live wires. I mean to correct that as well as update the...

    Obviously done without a permit

I live in a community near Chicago that requires a permit just for thinking about doing something to your home, so it's clear the previous owner that did this wasn't thinking at all. I'm not an electrician but even I can see that this is wrong. The opener is plugged in with an extension cord...

    Garage floor is hopeless

There's no rebar in the concrete. The home inspector said it's ancient, likely original. Fairly certain that the base isn't up to today's standard either.

    Garage floor is hopeless

Here's a picture of where the floor meets the wall. I'm not sure what I'm looking at here, but I don't see what I think footings would look like. I should also mention that this is likely the original garage structure from 1922.

    Garage floor is hopeless

I just bought a house and the garage is a hot mess. The structure is solid but the floor is cracked in multiple places. I was hoping that I could replace the floor without having to build a whole new garage but my first inquiry to a contractor wasn't inspiring. He told me that if I have a...
