    Markers of quality

The Project Farm guy needs engineering training 101. A lot of his tests are strange or for entertainment doing things way out of range and then measuring to breaking with sample sizes of one rather than proper statistics. Some of the stuff he does and sub-parts has some value. Some not. Then...

    Permit approved!

No issue: neutrons stop at the property line. A true life humorous oddity: I am a physicist and worked some years at Livermore Lab in Cali. A guy I knew there was importing uranium ore as a kid while trying to refine it to make his own nuclear weapon. He failed (isotope purity is hard ...

Well. It depends what you are doing. I use needle nose vice grips a lot in broken and damaged bolt extractions, pulling hardened wires (springs ... like on brake drums), clamping, etc. Bremen is not bad for the $. BUT the jaws are sub-standard in alignment and material quality/hardening...

I agree with what you are saying. Blake added some in a later post explaining that even trades people making regular use of locking pliers did not see the reason to spend more so it was too rare that anyone paid the extra premium to buy the Malco Eagle Grips. Maybe it could have worked if...

I agree. But I was hopeful with Malco that the significant community of trades people would be more interested in buying a much better tool for a modest amount more $ without needing to rebuy and dispose of crappy versions so much and that would be enough of a market to sustain. But that...

I read some time back here that Snap-On purchased the tooling from Malco when they went under. So they are likley making more or less the same thing as the former Eagle Grips with some degree of tweaking. This probably makes sense. Malco was not able to sell for a modest but higher price to...

Need Advice On Installing OSB To Garage Trusses

Comment for the OP: My CA home has a similar age 2-car garage with a roof with a similar slope and span. I did pretty much the same thing as shown in your pics putting plates around both sides of all the truss connections: both glued and screwed heavily (was a pain to install since I had to...

No problem. Japan is a very interesting place with a fascinating culture. They do some things *really* well working together efficiently. On the minus side, a bad boss in Japan is awful since Japanese workers cannot say "no" and correct in their society as easily as we can here in the USA...

I do not think so. My sense (wife is Japanese and our two sons spend summers in Japan) is that things get done with rigorous dilligence in Japan when they are expected to be performed. It is their culture. Warnings (to an excessive extent) are expected: so they get done. Even if the guy...

Japan may be the one country in the world that rivals the USA on idiot type warnings posted all over. In the case of the USA, I think our tendency for the excessive warnings is driven by too many lawyers and dummies generating lawsuits with potential large liabilities that can kill...

    Harry J Epstein Day 2026

I suspect some people, when they make a lot of money and have disposable cash, they want to get the "best" and assume that very high price reflects that. So they will rebuy common things at high cost. I agree Council axes and hammers are likely just as good as the extremely expensive...

    Harry J Epstein Day 2026

I would LOVE to hear the conversation with the TSA screeners in an airport. Plus the poor aircraft designers. I think they hate women's high heels from the point stress on aircraft floors.

I think Snap-On was rebranding Bahco (made to spec?) for a while and has been going back to making their own. They appear good as you would expect for the price. Perhaps their stock is a mix right now of Bahco-made and Snap-On-made until they fully move out old Bahco rebrand stock.

    Estimating paint usage

I tend to like the layered cake look of laminates also. Everyone has their taste. But it looks nice to me. Laminates with high glue impregnation are also incredibly strong and stable relative to ordinary wood. Wood makes a lightweight lattice that becomes much stronger and dimensionally...
