Update... I decided to return the DCD796 hammer drill and exchange it for a DCD791 drill. The DCD791 chuck is rock solid. So it is clear the axial movement of the DCD796 chuck is a result/compromise of the hammer mechanism. The lesson to learn here is that more does not always equal better: If...

TL;DR - The DeWalt DCD796 hammer drill's chuck can be pushed inwards about 5 mm (I guess because of the hammer function but it's there even when not on the hammer position). I do find this annoying for very small drills. My question: Does the non-hammer DCD791 have a chuck that cannot be pushed...
