Care and feeding of a bench vise

Lube the main nut and the spindle generously, lube behind the meatball where it contacts the dynamic jaw tower, and for a fixed base vise lightly lube the underside of the dynamic jaw tower where it contacts the static jaw tower.

Craftsman 05196 swivel base mechanics vice

It's interesting to note that the very first vise I ever restored is a Craftsman 5163, and it was also missing the center bolt for the swivel base. And it takes that exact 7/8-14 bolt with a brass bushing that I turned on my metal lathe.

    Hollands Vise

Hollands began manufacturing vises in 1887. Here is a page from a Hollands catalog that lists your vise, but I don't know the year.

70's Homeowner Grade Rockwell Router as Die Grinder

It’s funny that this discussion came up. I was just using this die grinder I restored to working condition to smooth out a cavity in a Charles Parker dynamic slide on a 69F bench vise. https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/very-early-skilsaw-hand-grinder.530390/ The hand grinder did the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Thanks Micahd! I looked over the slide and there are no date stamps on mine. The jaws are non-replaceable too. So I'm guessing this means it is pre-1920s.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I just picked up this vise earlier today. The only markings on it are what you see in the photos. It has 6 inch wide jaws, and weighs in the neighborhood of 150 lbs. The design looks familiar to me, but i can't seem to put my finger on who built it. Any ideas?

Fireball Tool Hardtail Vise - The Best Vise On The Market???

I believe that many of the people here who are arguing about cast versus wrought, steel versus iron, graphite flake versus nodule geometry in various cast iron microstructures, etc. would benefit greatly from consulting this reference book:

Stanley Bailey Wood Plane No. 5 Type and Year?

The fellow who owned it took impeccably good care of his tools neophyte. It would not surprise me if Pexto got it right, which I think he did. Thanks Pexto!

Stanley Bailey Wood Plane No. 5 Type and Year?

I purchased this Stanley Bailey No. 5 smooth bottom wood plane at an estate sale this past week for $15.00. It appears to be in excellent condition, and out of curiosity I was trying to look up what type it is and year of manufacture as a minimum, and this is where I could use some guidance. Is...
