    Metal Building Questions

Think about eaves and overhangs. I wish I had gotten around 3' eaves on both buildings. The 10' overhang on the shed worked out very well.

Finally got around to installing a new water heater anode.

Have you folks looked at using a powered anode rather than a sacrificial one?

    Electric fence

Either look for the energizer and see if it is pulsing or touch the wire (gingerly) with the back of your hand. If the fence is live, using the back of your hand will cause your muscles to contract and pull your hand away from the fence. Note that the energizers usually pulse once per second.

Cat 5 for phone and doorbell?

Let's look at some numbers, purely hypothetical, of course. Let's say we've got a 16VAC 30VA transformer driving our doorbell. Let's also say the chime is taking the full capacity of the transformer, which would be 1.875 A at 16VAC. Now, cat 5 with 24AWG conductors has a resistance, per...

Are there aftermarket inline start capacitors for a/c units?

How about one of these? http://www.gen-pro.biz/#!single-phase/ch6q I put one of the single phase models on my condenser to keep the lights from blinking when it started. Supposed to increase the compressor life, as well.

Anyone had experiance with EZ-Set garage torsion springs?

I've got those on three doors in my garage. Not the exact same brand, but the same style. They work quite well and make it simple to tweak the tension so the openers operate properly. Haven't had a spring break, so don't know how that is handled, whether you have to change the whole assembly...

has anyone here built a pop can solar heater?

Take a look at builditsolar.com. There are several variants of the pop can collector. He's also got data comparing different types. The screen type of collector looks like it would be simpler to build.

pictures wanted of hanging flourscent strip fixtures in metal building

For the OP, the rationale behind my setup was to maintain flexibility for the height and arrangement of fixtures. The picture doesn't show it (had to resize and crop) but the light fixtures are over a machine shop consisting of a lathe and mill. I've already temporarily moved the fixtures...

pictures wanted of hanging flourscent strip fixtures in metal building

Well, the fixtures came from the manufacturer with the cord attached and the lighting circuit is on a GFCI breaker. No problem with the lights or with RF interference. Why not a good idea? Any actual reasoning here, or just a feeling?

Here's how I hung mine. Welded in another peice of box tubing in the endwall and then screwed 1 1/2 x 3 C purlins on top of the new box and the existing roof tubing. Ran conduit and then used some chain to get the lights to the level I wanted.

BTW, wachuko, the first link for anchors isn't the correct part number. That one is for the WD-58, which is rather different from the PD-58. Far as I can tell, toolfetch doesn't have the PD-58.
