Is it worth building if the building is small?

Took me a couple tries, too! Haha! :)

Price per SF in Washington DC Area?

That is a great reference point. I really like your garage! When you say cost added, you mean above the $24500 you stated? Or that was included in that figure?

Price per SF in Washington DC Area?

Haha, I had to put that in there. Wife will kill me if I build this garage before redoing the kitchen or adding a second bathroom!!! ;)

Price per SF in Washington DC Area?

$500 per SF? I hope that's a typo! (I grew up in Fairfax.) Then again, you don't see many detached garages in Fairfax. If it's most likely going to cost over $25k to build a 1-car detached garage in Arlington (where the house is), I might as well give up on this idea now. There are so many...

Price per SF in Washington DC Area?

I am at the very beginning stages of planning my garage (we haven't even closed on the house yet, but will soon)! Has anyone built a detached garage in the DC area? What did your project end up costing and what does that cost include? I'm wondering what the typical prices per square foot are...

Is it worth building if the building is small?

Haha! I made a thread about the initial plans for my garage, and people were telling me than 20x20 is way too small even though I wanted to use it for just 1 car + tools/storage. For me, the more important factor would be getting the ceiling height such that I could install a lift.

Is it worth building if the building is small?

I was thinking a gambrel roof, too. Sheesh. I'd be lucky if I could get 400 SF in my future garage....

    Starting to plan my garage!

Good idea. I considered making it an attached garage. However, there is only 11-12 feet on each side of the house to the property line. For an attached structure, you must maintain 8 foot setback, which would only allow me 4 feet past the current left or right side of the house. For a...

    Starting to plan my garage!

I will check. But it is typical in Arlington (you guessed it!) to have concrete driveways right up against the property line. :) Otherwise, I will have to make it gravel or something! Hey, I kinda like gravel driveways! By the way, I LOOOVE your collection of Land Rovers!!!! Here is our...

    Starting to plan my garage!

MScott, thanks for the advice! I agree 20x20 may be too small in practice (actually, most townhouse garages we looked at were 10x20!!). I wonder if the house will look silly if the garage is bigger than the house itself (the house has a footprint of about 25'x20')!! I also want to avoid...

    Starting to plan my garage!

I guess the first question I have is whether this is the ideal location for the garage. I have set it back a ways from the back of the house in case we want to make a future addition, but not so far that it would be a long uphill walk just to get to the garage (in the rain and such). I don't...

    Starting to plan my garage!

Hello all! I am new here, and am very impressed that such a community even exists to help people plan their garages! My wife and I are in the process of closing on our first house. It is on a 7500 SF lot, which in this area is rather large. I would like to build a detached garage in the back...
